 (Reuters) - Western states expressed alarm afterSyria acknowledged for the first time that it has chemical and biological weapons and said it could use them if foreign countries intervene.

"Any chemical or bacterial weapons will never be used ... during the crisis in Syria regardless of the developments," Makdissi said. "These weapons are stored and secured by Syrian military forces and under its direct supervision and will never be used unless Syria faces external aggression."

Barack Obama, the US president, has said that the government of Bashar al-Assad will be held accountable if it makes the "tragic mistake" of using chemical and biological weapons, which Damascus admitted to possessing on Monday.

Speaking during an address to war veterans in Reno, Nevada, the US president said "today we're also working so that the Syrian people can havea better future, free of the Assad regime".

Referring to the stockpile of weapons, specifically, Obama said:

Given the regime's stockpiles of chemical weapons, we will continue to make it clear to Assad and those around him that the world is watching and that they will be held accountable by the international community and the United States should they make the tragic mistake of using those weapons.

We don't believe criminal promises....

Colonel Abdel Jabbar al-Oqaidi, a spokesman for the Free Syrian Army has said that fighters have "liberated" several areas of the northern city of Aleppo.

Speaking to the AFP news agency via Skype, Oqaidi said Monday's actions were "the first step towards the liberation of the city". 

"Regime forces continue to pound these [captured] districts from the outskirts with tanks and helicopters," Oqaidi, said of the Salah el-Din, Shaar, Hanano City, Tareq al-Bab and Sheikh Najjar neighbourhoods.
